Latex Vs. Latex-Free Orthodontic Elastics | Selection Guide

elastic comparison

Orthodontic elastics are used to deliver traction forces between teeth, brackets, attachments, or the upper and lower dental arches.

The fundamental difference between latex and latex-free orthodontic elastics lies in their materials. Material composition further affects the presence of natural latex proteins, as well as elasticity, force decay, appearance, and aging characteristics.

Understanding these differences helps clinics and distributors select appropriate products and plan their inventory of commonly used specifications. The specific size, force level, attachment points, and wearing instructions should be determined by an orthodontic professional.

What Are Latex Orthodontic Elastics?

Latex orthodontic elastics are primarily made from natural rubber latex. The main elastic component of natural rubber is cis-1,4-polyisoprene, which offers good extensibility, elastic recovery, and fatigue resistance.

In terms of overall material performance, latex elastics generally provide better elastic recovery and sustained force retention. After continuous stretching, their force delivery is usually more stable than that of latex-free products.

The main limitation of latex products is that they contain natural rubber latex proteins, which may cause latex sensitivity reactions. Individuals with known or suspected latex sensitivity should avoid orthodontic elastics containing natural rubber latex.

What Are Latex-Free Orthodontic Elastics?

Latex-free orthodontic elastics are made from synthetic elastomers that do not contain natural rubber latex. Common materials include polyurethane-based synthetic elastomers, while some products use other synthetic rubber formulations.

Because they do not contain natural rubber latex proteins, latex-free elastics are suitable for individuals who need to avoid natural latex exposure. Their primary value is to provide an alternative to latex products, rather than to deliver greater elasticity than latex elastics.

Compared with latex products, latex-free elastics generally offer better resistance to oxidation and greater storage stability. However, they may exhibit more significant force decay after continuous stretching.

“Latex-free” means that the product is not made with natural rubber latex. It does not mean that the product cannot cause sensitivity in any individual.

Key Differences Between Latex and Latex-Free Orthodontic Elastics

Comparison

Latex Orthodontic Elastics

Latex-Free Orthodontic Elastics

Primary Material

Natural rubber latex

Synthetic elastomers such as polyurethane

Natural latex proteins and sensitivity

Contains natural latex proteins; not suitable for individuals with known or suspected latex sensitibity

Does not contain natural latex proteins; suitable for individuals who need to avoid natural latex exposure

Elastic recovery and sustained force retention

Generally better elastic recovery and relatively slower force decay

Generally faster force decay and a greater tendency toward permanent elongation

Appearance

Commonly natural light yellow or amber; colored options may also be available

Commonly transparent or translucent; specific colors depend on the material formulation

Material aging

More sensitive to high temperatures, ultraviolet light, oxygen, and ozone

Generally offers better resistance to oxidation and greater storage stability
